Experiment of the Week – Using Potato Chips To Start A Fire

From keeping drinks cold to creating a camp fire, summer can offer a lot of challenges. Jason Lindsey aka “Mr. Science” with Hooked on Science introduces us to a summer science hack, which uses a popular snack, to help you start a camp fire.

INGREDIENTS

  • Grill Lighter
  • Doritos Cool Ranch Flavored Tortilla Chips


INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1:  Place several Doritos Cool Ranch flavored tortilla chips in a fireproof dish. Describe the chips by using their observable properties.
STEP 2:  Using the grill lighter, ignite the chips and observe. Describe the chips by using their observable properties. Did burning the chips results in a new substance.

EXPLANATION

Fuel, oxygen, and heat are all needed for fire. These three ingredients make up what is known as the fire triangle. The Doritos Cool Ranch flavored tortilla chips easily catch fire due to the flavor powder and oil on the chips, which creates a good combination for combustion.
